I am a grown adult, and I still get a little thrill every time I do it.
For that Europe trip, I packed for two weeks across three different climates. I had jeans, sweaters, T-shirts, workout clothes, and everything else I needed. I was able to fit everything into a carry-on without checking a bag.
That made a bigger difference than I expected.
Instead of dragging a large suitcase through the airport and waiting at baggage claim, I could walk off the plane with my carry-on and head straight to the hotel.
The fabric on these cubes feels thick and durable rather than flimsy. The zippers have also been smooth and easy to use, even when the cubes are packed full. If you only travel once every few years and usually pack light, you may not need a compression set like this. A basic set could be perfectly adequate.
But if you travel regularly, pack bulky clothing, prefer carry-on travel, or simply hate fighting with an overstuffed suitcase, compression cubes make a lot more sense.
The biggest advantage is that you can separate your belongings while also reducing the amount of space your clothes occupy.
That combination is what makes them different from ordinary packing cubes.
I have also found them useful when traveling between different climates. Instead of mixing sweaters, T-shirts, underwear, and workout clothes together, I can keep everything separated and compress the bulkier items.
And when I get home, the same organization makes unpacking easier.
One thing I would not do, though, is use the extra space as an excuse to pack more than you actually need. Compression can make your suitcase look like it has plenty of room left, but the weight of all those clothes still counts.
That is an important distinction.
These cubes can help you pack smarter, but they cannot make a heavy suitcase weigh less.
For me, that is still a worthwhile upgrade.
